How to Clean Silver in 3 Simple Steps:
You'll need silver polish - ordinary toothpaste will work and is less expensive - and an old sock to get started.
1 Put a bit of the polish on a damp cloth or a freshly-laundered cotton sock.
Socks make ideal polishing cloths because of their sturdy nature. Use to apply polish with one side; then turn the sock over and buff with the other side.
Use up-and-down rather than circular strokes to polish the item quickly and effectively in less time.
2 Use a twisted bit of rag to get between silverware tines and other tight spaces.
This is the spot where tarnish gathers often unnoticed - except by your guests. Get it.
3 Finish the job with a few strokes using a dry cloth (or the other side of the sock).
Tips to prevent future tarnish:
-- Store silver behind glass, or in cloth or plastic bags, or in plastic wrap to keep tarnish to a minimum.
-- Resist the urge to bundle your silver in rubber bands - rubber can cause discoloration.
