Cleaning Essentials:
The 6 Basics

cleaning, cleaning tips, cleaning products, cleaning essentials How well stocked is your caddy? By having each of the 6 essential products in your cleaning arsenal, you can simplify your housekeeping routine - fast.

1 Nonabrasive, all-purpose product.

You'll find these clearly state same on their labels. They're ideal because one product can buff multiple home surfaces. Less money on products - and easier to carry. It doesn't get much better than this. (Ideally, yours should be in an easy to use spray bottle.)

2 Toilet-bowl product.

This one's a must-have. The germ-killing properties here go beyond the all-purpose variety.

3 Disinfectant.

Weekly at least, a disinfectant is required. Either make your own bleach-based disinfectant (3/4 cup chlorine bleach per gallon of water) or stock a pre-made disinfectant in your arsenal.

4 Tub, tile, and sink product.

Because these have ingredients specially designed to fight mold, mildew and banish soap scum fast, this is another must-have.

5 Liquid hand-dishwashing detergent.

An essential component in most home-mixes; and a gotta-have for dishes.

6 Window and glass cleaning product.

In a spray bottle for ease of use.

Green Cleaning Alternatives

Prefer "natural" or environmentally friendly substitutes to store-bought national brands? The choices are mushrooming.

Not only can you easily find "earth-friendly" products on your national grocery store chain's shelves, but traditional products are containing more natural ingredients. A healthier list of alternative supplies includes:

* Baking soda with water, as an all-purpose alternative

* White distilled vinegar diluted in water, for windows

* Borax, to disinfect and remove toilet-bowl stains

* Natural soaps (castille or glycerin-based), to wash dishes.
