If you live in an area prone to floods, it's only prudent to prepare your home and your family to survive such a catastrophe.
Here are the essentials to have in place:
1. A family
disaster-preparedness kit
that will allow you to be self-sufficient should services be interrupted for up to three days.
Your kit, stored in a watertight container, should include a first-aid kit, canned food (and opener), a gas stove, cooking equipment, candles and matches, a portable radio, flashlights and batteries.
You should also consider including a gas or battery-power lantern and a waterproof tarp to shelter your family if you must evacuate your home, life preservers fitted to each family member, and plenty of drinking water.(Be sure to change it every few months.)
2. If a rising-water watch is issued, move your furniture and valuables to a higher floor of your home. Then, fill up your car at the closest gas station so that your family will be prepared to leave in case evacuation is necessary.
3. If a flood warning is sounded, Mother Nature's fury is imminent.
Immediately log on to your favorite trusted weather or news website, or turn on the radio or TV for emergency updates and evacuation routes.
Grab your disaster kit, collect your valuables in large plastic bags, and get out of Dodge.
Even if the waters never dampen your doorstep, if you're in deluge territory, it's only prudent to prepare for the worst - and expect the best as a result.
