3 Easy, Inexpensive Ways to Warm Up Your Home

home-warm, home energy tips, maintenance tips, DIY tips 3 Easy Ways to Make Your Home Warm and Cozy This Winter.

Baby, it's cold outside! All we want to do is huddle by the fire and sip tea.

That's one solution. But for those of us who actually have to function, here are 3 easy ways to make our home warm and cozy.

1 The Practical Approach.

Actually make your house warmer. No - don't just turn up the thermostat. Instead, make your house as airtight as possible so that you can keep the warm air in and the cold air out.

1 Close the flue when you're not using the fireplace.

This keeps the warm air inside your home; the cold air out.

2 Remove window air conditioning units, or buy covers for them.

Don't let the chill outside come inside through tiny gaps between the window frame and an air-conditioner not in use.

3 Caulk openings around pipes and under sinks.Cold air seeps in continuously through non-airtight openings, forcing you to keep the heat on longer.

4 Replace or install weather stripping along doors.

Even a tiny gap can allow large amounts of chilly air inside your home.

5 Think insulation.

By insulating your home, you'll insulate your monthly energy bill, too. Everybody wins.

6 If you have single-paned windows, consider window-insulating kits or weatherstripping around the frame.

Or, consider replacing the older window with the more energy-efficient, newer double-paned window.

2 The Warm Fuzzy Approach.

OK, you've done all that - and you're still shivering. Sometimes it helps to create the illusion of warmth.

Think warm and fuzzy here. Have slippers stationed by the doors. Cover hardwood floors with plush area rugs. Drape soft, silky afghans over armchairs. Position pillows of chenille or velvet along couches.

Rearrange furniture to crate more intimate seating. Use area lamps instead of overhead lights. In short: Create spots so cozy you can't resist them.

OK, you've got your home set up mastered. Now go for the cozy part. Display family photos on tabletops. Bring in houseplants to soften the feel of the room. Complete the picture by appealing to the rest of your senses: Play soft music and light a few scented candles. Better yet - bake some cookies.

3 Warm Up The Bedroom.

Think lush duvets and flannel sheets. Fluffy oversize towels and a heated towel rack in the master bathroom. And just before bedtime, send your pajamas for a quick spin in the dryer so you tuck into bed already feeling warm and toasty.
