Wildlife Trash Trouble? How to Keep Animals Out of Backyard Garbage.
If your backyard bins are occasionally visited by animals - raccoons in my case - there's a simple way to lock out the hungry scavengers and prevent the morning mess such night visits provide.
A simple bungee cord (an elasticized rubber cord fitted at the end with hooks) battens down the garbage hatches and keeps curious paws out.
It's animal- and environmentally-friend, not messy and comes in various sizes to fit most outside garbage and recycling cans.
Best of all, it simply works.
I had the same problem with hungry night prowlers. Very strong, agile raccoons were making a mess of my backyard with garbage and recycling discards.
I eventually put an end to the nighttime escapades by hooking a bungee cord from the handles on either side of the can's lid, leaving it taut enough to keep prying claws out but easy enough for me to unhook and toss daily detritus in without having to do too much touching of the garbage cans.
