Keep Wildlife Out
of Your Backyard Garbage

animals in backyard trashcans, keep wild animals out of trash containers Wildlife Trash Trouble? These simple tips will keep your trash in and the wildlife safely out of your backyard garbage containers.

My nocturnal trash ripper is a racoon (or several). I'm not sure who was more startled when the well-fed black and white animal crept toward the patio table as I sat chatting away on my cell phone. Our eyes briefly met. Suffice it to say we both hightailed it outta there - fast.

Naturally, he was more careful next time he opted to dumpster dive. While I've seen the remnants, I've not seen the rascal since. (This is actually a good thing. For both of us.)

The good news: I've found a simple way to lock out the interloper and and lock in the refuse till trash day.

I fastened a bungee cord (an elasticized rubber cord fitted at the end with hooks) horizontally across the trash can from one side to the other. It's a cinch for the family to remove, but it is apparently no match for prying paws.
