How do I get urine/feces out of pebble epoxy flooring?

by Lauren
(Ocala, FL)

I have pebble epoxy flooring in one room of the house and the pebbles are tiny, so there are a million tiny cracks and crevices. My dog has decided that this room is her own personal bathroom, so I am constantly battling to clean this floor and get the smell out.

I can't figure out how to clean between all the deep crevices and get this floor clean. I have read that a lot of cleaning solutions can ruin this floor as well, so I'm stumped.

I've shared someone else's photo of similar flooring.

How to Remove Urine and Feces From Pebble Epoxy Flooring
by: Tara Aronson

Pebble epoxy flooring looks terrific, but cleaning pet accidents out of all those little nooks and crannies? That's another story.

The challenge is that pebble epoxy floors may have a textured, porous-looking surface where urine and feces can settle between the stones. Some floors are fully sealed, while others have exposed gaps that can trap moisture and odors.

Here's how to tackle the mess without damaging your floor.

1. Remove Solid Waste First

Put on disposable gloves and carefully pick up any solid waste using paper towels or a plastic scraper.

Avoid grinding the mess into the spaces between the pebbles. That's one cleaning project nobody needs.

2. Blot Up Urine

Use paper towels or absorbent cloths to soak up as much urine as possible.

Press gently rather than rubbing, which can spread the contamination into surrounding areas.

3. Clean With a Mild Solution

If your flooring manufacturer permits water-based cleaning, mix a small amount of pH-neutral floor cleaner with warm water.

Use a soft-bristled nylon brush to gently work the solution between the pebbles.

Avoid wire brushes, abrasive powders, and harsh chemicals that could damage the epoxy binder.

4. Remove the Dirty Cleaning Solution

This step is especially important.

Use absorbent towels or a wet/dry vacuum rated for liquid pickup to extract the dirty water from the textured surface.

Don't leave contaminated water sitting between the stones.

5. Address Lingering Odors

If the smell remains, consider an enzyme-based pet urine cleaner specifically labeled safe for epoxy or resin-bound stone flooring.

Test it in an inconspicuous area first, and follow the product's directions carefully.

Not every enzyme cleaner is suitable for every epoxy finish.

6. Disinfect When Appropriate

Cleaning removes the visible mess, but it doesn't necessarily disinfect the floor.

If disinfection is needed, choose a disinfectant whose label specifically allows use on your flooring's surface type. Follow its required contact time and directions.

Never mix disinfectants with enzyme cleaners, vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaning products.

7. Dry the Floor Thoroughly

Use fans and good ventilation to help the floor dry completely.

If odors return after cleaning, urine may have penetrated gaps in the pebble surface or reached the material underneath.

In that case, a professional flooring contractor may need to inspect the floor and determine whether deep cleaning or resealing is necessary.

What to Avoid

Bleach or ammonia unless specifically approved for the flooring and application

Steam cleaning without manufacturer approval

Aggressive pressure washing

Metal brushes or abrasive scrubbing pads

Excessive water that cannot be extracted

The bottom line: Remove the waste, clean gently, extract the dirty water, and dry thoroughly. If the odor keeps returning, the problem may be beneath the surface rather than on top of it.

And once the floor is clean, you might want to have a little conversation with the four-legged member of the household about appropriate bathroom locations. Good luck with that one!
