How to get Soap residue stain out of fabric couch

Help please! My baby spit up his entire bottle on our couch. I read to blot dry with a paper towel, and then apply kitchen soap to the area (blot), and then water to help get rid of the soap.


The problem is, I now have a giant soap stain on the couch! It looks awful and I'm not sure what to do.

Any tips on how to spot treat it? In not sure I'll be able to get the material back on the cushion if I take it off. Thank you!!

Soap residue on a fabric couch can leave stiff, sticky, or discolored patches. And adding more soap usually makes matters worse!

First, check the couch's cleaning code, usually found on a tag beneath the cushions:

W: Water-based cleaning is permitted.

S: Use an approved solvent-based upholstery cleaner, not water.

W/S: Either method may be appropriate.

X: Vacuum only; consult a professional for stains.

If your couch is labeled W or W/S, try these steps:

Vacuum the area. Remove loose dirt before introducing moisture.

Blot with a damp cloth. Lightly moisten a clean white microfiber cloth with distilled water. Blot the soapy area gently to lift residue. Don't soak the upholstery.

Repeat with a clean section. Rinse the cloth frequently and continue blotting until the soap stops transferring.

Remove excess moisture. Press a dry white towel against the fabric to absorb moisture.

Let it dry completely. Use a fan to circulate air. Avoid sitting on the couch until it's dry.

Always test in an inconspicuous spot first. Avoid scrubbing, adding vinegar, or applying more detergent without checking the manufacturer's instructions.

If the fabric remains stiff, develops water rings, or contains deeply embedded soap, a professional upholstery cleaner may be your best option.

The secret? Less soap, less water, and more patience. Your couch doesn't need another bubble bath.
