How to Clean Glass Pendant Lights on a High Ceiling
by: Tara Aronson

Hi Michaela!

Cleaning glass pendant lights hanging 3 to 5 meters (approximately 10 to 16 feet) above the floor is definitely a challenge! Beautiful lights are wonderful until you realize you need a small construction crew just to dust them.

The good news is that you may be able to handle routine dusting without climbing a ladder. For a thorough cleaning, though, safety comes first.

1. Try an Extendable Microfiber Duster

For regular dusting, I recommend a telescoping microfiber duster with a flexible head.

Look for one designed for high ceilings and delicate light fixtures. Some extend several meters, allowing you to reach pendant lights while keeping your feet firmly on the floor.

Choose a soft duster that won't scratch the glass, and use gentle movements to avoid swinging the pendants.

Turn off the lights and let the bulbs and fixtures cool completely before starting.

2. Use a Telescoping Cleaning Pole

If the glass shades have accumulated more than ordinary dust, a telescoping pole with a soft microfiber attachment may help clean accessible exterior surfaces.

However, I would use a dry attachment only. Spraying glass cleaner upward is a bad idea because liquid can enter the electrical fittings or drip onto the bulbs.

Avoid applying pressure that could loosen the pendant or damage its suspension.

3. Consider Whether the Glass Shades Are Removable

Some pendant lights have removable glass shades that can be washed separately.

If yours do, check the manufacturer's instructions for removing and cleaning them.

Once safely removed, many glass shades can be cleaned with mild dish soap and warm water, then dried thoroughly before reinstallation.

But at a height of 3 to 5 meters, removing the shades yourself may not be practical or safe.

4. Hire a Professional for Deep Cleaning

For lights hanging near the upper end of that height range, I'd seriously consider hiring a professional lighting cleaner or qualified maintenance service.

They have the appropriate access equipment and experience working around delicate, elevated fixtures.

This is especially worthwhile if the pendants need to be dismantled, the glass is heavily soiled, or the lights hang above stairs or furniture.

5. Keep Future Cleaning Simple

Once the glass is clean, a quick dusting every few weeks can prevent buildup.

Use a lightweight telescoping microfiber duster, working gently around each pendant.

That should reduce how often you need a more involved cleaning.

My Recommendation

Michaela, I'd start with an extendable microfiber duster for light surface dust. For anything requiring liquid cleaning or removing the glass shades, I'd hire a professional.

And please don't balance on furniture, lean from a ladder, or attempt to reach the fixtures with an unstable pole. No sparkling pendant light is worth a trip to the emergency room!

One question: Are your pendant lights individual hanging glass globes, or are they part of a larger chandelier-style fixture?

That would help me suggest the safest cleaning method for your particular lights.
